An organized cosmetic development process transforms a business idea into a safe, stable, attractive, and repeatable product. Each stage answers a distinct question; skipping one often transfers the problem to the factory, packaging, or market.
1. The briefing: turning vision into requirements
The briefing defines the user, benefit, sensory experience, format, claims, price, channel, and countries of sale. It should also indicate competitive references and what is not desired. The objective is not to describe a "good" cream, but to establish criteria that allow for decision-making.
2. Technical and regulatory viability
Before formulation, desired ingredients, restrictions, dosages, compatibilities, availability, and claim coherence are reviewed. If there is a natural or organic certification goal, it must be incorporated from the outset. Changing this condition at the end can force a reformulation.
3. Formula design and prototypes
The formulator selects the architecture, preservation system, active ingredients, and sensory modifiers. Prototypes allow for comparison of texture, spreadability, absorption, aroma, and appearance. Reviews should be based on defined criteria, not just isolated preferences.
4. Packaging selection
Formula and packaging form a system. The material, pump, dispenser, air exposure, and filling process can affect the product. Therefore, it is advisable to select the packaging while formulation is in progress, not afterward.
5. Tests and dossier
Depending on the formula and intended use, stability, compatibility, microbiological control, and other necessary evaluations are planned. In the European Union, the product must have a safety assessment and meet notification requirements before being marketed. Claims also need adequate support.
6. Scaling up
The laboratory recipe is converted into industrial instructions: quantities, equipment, loading order, temperatures, speeds, times, and controls. This may require a pilot batch to confirm that the result maintains the defined properties.
7. Manufacturing and release
During production, raw materials, process, bulk, filling, and finished product are controlled. After checking specifications and documentation, the batch can be released for distribution.
Working these stages with a single team facilitates knowledge transfer. At OKT GLOBAL, we connect formula development and manufacturing to bring ideas to market with less friction.
