Sunscreen under make-up: formulation and compatibility

A sunscreen worn under make-up must form a uniform film, settle quickly and interact well with serums, moisturisers, primers and foundations without compromising validation.

What make-up compatibility means

It does not automatically mean that sunscreen replaces a primer. The goal is to reduce drag, excessive shine, transfer and pilling when the correct amount is applied and products are layered.

Setting time and rheology

The balance between viscosity, spreadability and drying affects the finish. A formula that is too mobile can migrate; one that is too structured can drag or build up.

Pilling and interactions

Polymers, gums, silicones, powders and film formers can interact with products applied before or after sunscreen. Testing should use representative routines and more than one foundation.

Tinted and perfecting sunscreens

Pigments create additional challenges involving dispersion, shade uniformity, transfer and stability. Cosmetic coverage should never be confused with protection.

Reapplication during the day

Format, dispensing and finish affect how easily the product can be reapplied over make-up and should be considered from the development stage.

Recommended development protocol

  • Define the intended routine and benchmark products.
  • Compare relevant application methods.
  • Assess pilling, shine, transfer and uniformity.
  • Confirm packaging compatibility.
  • Validate SPF/UVA and any claim on the final formula.

Frequently asked questions

Can sunscreen be marketed as a primer?

Only when the positioning and evidence support that function; the final wording should be reviewed before use.

Does make-up replace sunscreen?

No. Make-up does not replace the tested amount or reapplication of the sunscreen.

Can you develop tinted and untinted versions?

Yes. Pigments, shades, uniformity, stability, packaging and testing must be assessed for each final formula.
