A lightweight, non-greasy sunscreen is not achieved by adding one ingredient. It comes from balancing filters, oil phase, emollients, rheology, film and packaging without compromising protection or stability.
Why some sunscreens feel heavy
Persistent shine, tackiness, drag, white cast or pilling can have different causes. Filter load and solubilisation, phase balance, thickeners, film formers and interaction with other cosmetics all affect the finish. Diagnosis should establish when the issue appears: during spreading, after absorption, on reapplication or under make-up.
Design the filter system as an architecture
Mineral, organic or hybrid filters must be selected for the target market and incorporated into a compatible vehicle. A nominal SPF target is not enough: uniform distribution on skin, photostability and testing of the final formula are part of development.
Emollients, sensory profile and absorption
Polarity, volatility and spreading rate influence both skin feel and the solubilisation of certain filters. A well-designed combination can reduce greasiness and improve application. Every change must be evaluated within the full system because an isolated sensory improvement can alter stability or film formation.
Rheology and make-up compatibility
Viscosity must support uniform application and work with the chosen tube, pump or airless pack. For urban use, we also assess settling time, shine, residue and pilling when moisturiser or make-up is layered on top. If a non-comedogenic claim is intended, it must be defined and supported by an appropriate assessment.
