The brief must describe real use
Before selecting filters, define skin type, finish, tint, fragrance, resistance, packaging and sales channel. The brief should also state whether the goal is an invisible, tinted, mineral, organic or hybrid formula and the countries where it will be sold.
UVA/UVB architecture
Filters, solvents, dispersants and film formers are designed as a system. The theoretical filter load does not replace uniform application or testing. Selection must comply with the requirements of the target market.
A lightweight texture for daily use
Spreadability, absorption, shine, white cast and tackiness influence consistent use. Prototypes are compared against defined sensory criteria so that decisions do not rely on first impressions alone.
Sunscreen and make-up
For urban formulas, settling time, compatibility with moisturisers and foundations, pilling and uniformity after layering are assessed. A tinted sunscreen adds challenges around shade, pigment dispersion, transfer and stability.
Oily skin and non-comedogenic claims
A lightweight, low-shine profile can be designed for oil-prone skin. However, terms such as non-comedogenic must be supported by the appropriate assessment or test before being used as a commercial claim.
Stability, packaging and scale-up
The formula must remain homogeneous and work with the selected pump, airless pack or tube. Temperature, dispersion, mixing and addition order are then transferred to a pilot batch before industrial manufacturing.
